Oakgrove, Caterham-on-the-Hill

This site was originally a hospital set within a mature landscape, but many of the trees were poor quality and unsuitable for long term retention.  Through lengthy discussions with the Local Planning Authority, a sustainable tree management strategy was agreed, which included the retention of a dense woodland belt around the boundaries to conserve local character, but supplemented by new planting of semi-mature trees within the new housing layout.  Tree species, size potential and size at planting were carefully designed to optimise the tree canopy cover on the site from a climate change adaptation and local character perspective, with the minimum of inconvenience to future occupants from trees being too close to their amenity space.
